Jenny Patterson.Anatomy and Physiology books are core to the study of Medicine. An in-depth understanding of Anatomy and Physiology requires reading from credible resources.

With textbooks on Anatomy being produced on the daily, resources are vast, making it somewhat difficult for medical students to decide the best anatomy and physiology books to buy and use.

Given that anatomy and physiology books cost a pretty sum, we, have narrowed them down to a top five. We hope this list will help you save time on research and invest your money in an Anatomy textbook that will serve you in the long term. It is a must-have in Medical school for three main reasons.

best medical books for beginners

First, because it is a useful resource for both anatomy class and also surgery clerkship, which comes later on. Second, it comes with a student consult containing complementary learning resources and an anatomy dissection guide. However, it contains illustrated drawings rather than more realistic cadaver photographs.

If you prefer clarity over realistic images, this book is for you. The book is authentic, using actual cadaver photographs pretty close to what you will view during practical exams. It is a worthwhile investment as a study resource because it covers both general anatomy in the first year as well as surgery and dissection later on in the third year. It also comes with access to online text making it accessible via mobile devices anywhere, anytime. You may, however, feel while cadaver photographs are realistic, multiple flesh-colored zones in pictures tend to blend blurring structural borders.

It has precise text corresponding with well-illustrated images which you get to color as you study. The only downside is that while it is excellent for beginners in Medicine, you may not find it useful if you are an intermediate student. It has high ratings with pristine illustrations -which many refer to as works of art- and labeling that makes studying enjoyable. It is a favorite to many as an excellent reference for anything medicine, perfect for use for both medical students as well as medicine enthusiasts.

Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies offers a fun and easy way to tackle the basics of anatomy and Physiology by taking complex subjects and breaking them down to more straightforward, more digestible facts. The textbook contains terminologies in Anatomy and Physiology, an overview of anatomical structures, and an overview of body systems.

If you are a first-year student in any medical field, are in need of a supplementary textbook, or need a manual for a refresher course, then this book is perfect for you.

The only con I found to this book is that it may be too simplistic for students past first and maybe second year. The above books have 5-star rankings and excellent reviews from professionals in the medical field.

This means you should choose books depending on if you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced level student. Also, consider the portion of your study that the book will cover. A book with content for beginners and advanced learners is a good investment.

Five books to read before starting medical school

The type of images and language used in the book should be stimulating to you as they make it easier for you to study. All in all, you should always get anatomy and physiology books. If you are a medical or healthcare career student. Check it out when you have time.

Have fun as you find the book that is best for you and that will make studying anatomy and physiology a breeze. Your email address will not be published. Post Pagination Next Post Next. It was the summer after my freshman year of college and I was volunteering in an outpatient pediatric ward. In the span of a week, I had seen two babies die.

A newborn died of complications from seizures right in front of me, and a two week old baby died of malnutrition as we watched him wither away in an incubator.

I couldn't stand the feeling of being a part of a system that was cumbersome and ineffective, I couldn't stand my heart breaking, and I wanted to want to be anything other than a doctor.

I lay in bed the next day and looked around my rented tropical room for distraction. It is a compilation of stories, each chapter written by a doctor in a different specialty discussing his or her most memorable patient.

If you're interested in medicine, the reality of it, then I suggest taking Nuland up on his offer to glimpse the mark that medicine leaves on a doctor's soul. I keep it next to my couch in case a lost friend ever happens upon it the way I did.

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder was the next book that strongly influenced me. A detailed glimpse into the life story and accomplishments of Paul FarmerMD, PhD, who not only serves as a role model for anyone interested in global health, but who has changed the world for the better in a tangible way. What I remember from this book is a short scene in which we learn that, at least during the time the journalist was shadowing him, Farmer saw his daughter only once a month.

They say that part of a teenager's angst is realizing that her parents are not perfect and being angry at them for their flaws. Well, Dr. Farmer, I'm still angry with you for missing out on your daughter's childhood the way my dad did. And for the rest of my life, when I think about changing the world by saving peoples lives, it will be with the caveat of improving on the model that he lived by.

Because to me, there's no point in helping strangers if I'm hurting the ones I love. CollinsMD, were two medical memoirs that resonated strongly with me.

I read these the summer that I was writing my medical school applications. Somehow, the application process has a way of making everyone feel incompetent or mediocre at best. And here was a guy who decided to take post-bachelor classes as a construction worker, carpool to medical school, and marry the love of his life before starting residency at the Mayo Clinic. Almost every page of his books had me laughing or crying as I rooted for him.

Other notable books I highly recommend:. Natalia Birgisson is a second-year student at Stanford's medical school. She is half Icelandic, half Venezuelan and grew up moving internationally before coming to Stanford for college.

She is interested in neurosurgery, global health, and ethics. Natalia loves running and baking; when she's lucky the two activities even out. My love of medicine and people propelled me toward psychology, then public health, where I could combine everything into fields like psychosocial oncology and perinatal psychology. My not-so-secret desire to be a doctor, though, has never really gone away. At this point, I have accepted that my graduate school loans are sizable enough, and my life no longer has room for the possibility of ever going to medical school — and besides, when I did take some prerequisites, although I love reading medical textbooks, my brain just does not like rote memorization…which is a problem in the biological sciences.

But I still love reading about medicine, doctoring, and anything in the medical field in medical books. Here, in no particular order, are 50 must-read and best medical books.
